Day 1 Schedule

10:00AM - 12:00PM: Exploring our neighborhood and recording footage - Armed with an iPhone camera, we’ll head outdoors, in and around our neighborhood, recording moving images of objects, people and places that speak to us. Students will take turns controlling the camera and will work together to decide what to film. After spending a few hours out and around recording footage, we’ll head back to our workstation to begin cutting the footage.

12:00PM - 12:40 PM: Break for lunch. While students are having their lunch, all the footage will be uploaded to iMovie, ready to be cut.

12:40PM - 2:00PM: Cutting the footage into a movie: With the students’ input and participation, we will cut together a vibrant 60 - 90 second movie from the footage that we shot earlier. Students will have the opportunity to work within iMovie, learning how to control and cut footage themselves. We will also color correct and have the opportunity to add effects/filters.

DAY 2 SCHEDULE

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Organizing our footage and beginning to consider our musical framework - Before beginning any project, it’s very important to organize our footage. We will go through the footage and identify the important moments, discuss overall mood, feeling of the movie. This will help inform how we would like our music to sound. After that, we will watch some clips of movie scenes with powerful music and have a discussion about what was effective, what was not, what musical techniques were used to create tension or release in the scene, etc.

12:00 - 12:45 PM: Break for lunch outside on the grass (weather permitting)

12:45 - 2:00 PM: Begin scoring: Using our Logic Pro x sound library and additional music libraries, we will begin writing to our movie. For inspiration, we will spend some time listening to a select subset of instruments and sounds - what feels like it goes with the vibe of our movie? Do we want strings, do we want electronic sounds, what are overall emotions we want to convey through our movie and music?

Day 3 Schedule

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Continue to score our project: Develop our musical ideas, add new musical instruments when applicable, making sure to compose towards the high points in our film we identified yesterday. Watch back our existing movie to the music, discuss how it’s all working together.

12:00 - 12:45 PM: Break for lunch outside on the grass (weather permitting)
12:45 - 2:00 PM -  Finish scoring our project: Finish writing our music, scoring each scene in our film. At the end of the day we will watch back our entire movie. How does music elevate moving images?

Each project will be compiled in a dropbox link and emailed to family at the end of the camp!
